Samuel Sumner Obituary

DUANESBURG - Samuel L. Sumner, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday December 24, 2023. He was born in Woodstock, Maine on April 15, 1940 to the late Leaton Edward and Myrtle E. Allen Sumner. After graduating high school, Sam joined the US Navy, and was stationed in Puerto Rico. It was there he met and married Carmen Mendez, and together they had three children. He first moved his family back to Maine, and then came to Amsterdam, NY. Following a divorce, he then met and married the love of his life, Sylvia Putnam, and they settled in Duanesburg with their son. Sam was a jack of all trades and worked at various jobs throughout his life. He was in construction, was a businessman, owned a few businesses, and ran the radio station, WKOL. He was an EMT, volunteering for Duanesburg Ambulance. He was also a member of the Duanesburg Florida Baptist Church, volunteering for many church activities. Sam enjoyed hunting and fishing. 

Sam is survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia J. Putnam Sumner; his children, Monique (the late Eric) Krutz, Eric (Sandy) Sumner, Samuel Lee (Kimberly) Sumner, Jr., and Christopher Sumner; step-daughter, Michelle Becker; grandchildren, Matthew (Misty) Krutz, Casey (Emily Noel) Sumner, Marc Krutz, Cody (Emily Rose) Sumner; great-grandchildren, Trystan Killian Sumner, Jason Ryan Sumner, and Brooke Elliana Sumner; his siblings, Martha Elizabeth “Liz” (late husband Donald) Cadette, Floyd (Joy) Sumner, Lois (Rodney) Abbott, Leaton Jr “Skip” (Marie) Sumner, Linda (George) Wade, Kathleen (Floyd) McKinnon, Mary Jean Connell, Alrick Sumner, Susan Kemp, Viola Pierchorowicz; his aunt, Mae Lewis; and many nieces and nephews.

A calling hour will be held on Saturday January 6th from 2 to 3pm at the Duanesburg Florida Baptist Church, 7967 State Highway 30, Delanson, followed by a funeral service at 3pm. Interment will be at a later date. Memorial donations in his memory can be made to the Duanesburg Florida Baptist Church, 7967 State Route 30, Delanson, NY 12053.
