Welcome to the memorial page for

Laura E (Dickinson) Coons

October 2, 1924 ~ October 25, 2017 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Laura E. Coons (Dickinson), devoted wife of the late Arthur Franklin Coons, Knight Road, Delanson, and loving mother of Edna Mae Coons, East Greenbush, left this troubled world behind on October 25th. For the previous several years, due to a broken hip but not a broken spirit or mind, she was a resident of Evergreen Commons, East Greenbush.

Laura was the daughter of the late Edna Christman Kilmartin and Clarence Jacob Dickinson, Duanesburg; the younger step-mother to Della’s children, the late Art, Hank, Ken and Retta; a proud grandmother; a happy great-grandmother; and a sweetly adoring great-great grandmother. She leaves behind Cousin Elton and dear friends Dorthy, Stanly, Joyce, Ann, Lois and especially Darlene.

Laura was born on the Dickinson family farm on October 2, 1924, the only child of Clarence and Edna. She worked briefly for General Electric before marrying and moving to the Coons homestead on Knight Road. Her honeymoon trip to New York City was Laura’s first – and last – holiday. As a traditional farmer’s wife, she worked tirelessly and without complaint in the field, barn and kitchen, cooking bountiful meals for the men, making mouth watering fresh pies, baking heavenly rolls and canning scores of delicious butter and sugar pickles and other vegetables and fruits.

Laura was an amazingly good person and during her lifetime she suffered more trials and tribulations than was fair; her entire life was one of sacrifice and service. Laura was a hard working woman with salt-of-the-earth sensibilities, living a simple life while respecting others and always placing the needs of family above her own. She was smart without formal book learning, kind without condescension, religious without judgment and long suffering without complaint. We will miss our selfless, unassuming matriarch with her keen and bright blue eyes; may she be blessed with peace, love, support, respect and kindness.

Services will be held at the White–Van Buren Funeral home in Delanson on Thursday, November 2 , 2017 . A Visitation hour will be at 10:00 am with the funeral at 11:00. Burial will follow at the Coons family plot in Old Stone Fort Cemetery in Schoharie. Donations in honor of Laura, and in memory of her lifelong support of family and friends, may be made to The ARC of Rensselaer County, 79 102nd St, Troy, NY 12180-1125.
